The Dodgers lost as Mark Prior outpitched Brad Penny. The Padres won and as a result the Dodgers lost a game in the standings.

Wow. Derek Lowe tossed a one-hit shutout today. Jerry Hairston was the only Cubs batter to get a base hit, and he did that in the first inning. The Dodger bats came alive as Olmedo Saenz slugged a home run, and the final score was 7-0.

You still think they have a realistic shot of making the playoffs? Be real dave

I don't think they will win the division. The Padres will more than likely win it. The Dodgers still have six games against the Padres and six more against the D'Backs in September, so it's still possible.

San Diego will sneak over .500 before the end of the year

In the offseason, I thought the Dodgers would sneak away with the AL West this year, but it appears as if San Diego will see the postseason instead. Can't say that any team in that division deserves a playoff berth, though.

I was even duped myself, especially after the 12-2 start to the season.

And losing Gagne for the year really hurt them. Having such a dominant closer at the end of each games adds a load of pressure onto the opposing team, so that was an edge the Dodgers missed out on this season.

Now it's definitely over. The Dodgers are now 7 games back after losing twice in a row to a sorry team like Colorado. Coupled with a Padres victory and a possible Giants victory over Arizona, can move the Dodgers into fourth place in the NL West tonight.

After getting swept by the Rockies, the Dodgers dropped the first game to the Giants 3-1. The Padres were idle tonight. So the Giants are now within five of the Padres, and the Dodgers dropped to 7.5 game behind.

This series against the Padres is literally a "do-or-die" series. They are currently 7 games back.

The Dodgers were 8 games out last Friday, and now all of a sudden they are 5 games out. So things might start looking more interesting in the days ahead.

You need a collapse from San Diego if you want LA to make it

I've stated several the past two weeks that the Dodgers season is over. But every time they gain a couple of games in the standings, I start getting optimistic again and then they start losing again. But this is it. It's over in 2005. No more optimism.

The 2005 season is only the Dodgers second losing season since 1993. The other one was in 1999. During the same stretch, the Pirates and Brewers haven't had a single winning season.
